Clean Glass Light Fixtures

Hand-wash removable glass shades unless the fixture manufacturer explicitly says they are dishwasher-safe. Heat and detergent can damage coatings, delicate glass, or attached parts.

Remove and clean

1. Switch the light off and let bulbs and glass cool. Turn off the circuit before working on the fixture, and use a stable stepladder.
2. Support the shade with one hand while releasing its screws, ring, or finial as the manual directs. Do not pull on wiring or force stuck hardware.
3. Dust first. Wash plain removable glass in warm, mild soapy water if the manufacturer permits it. Keep electrical parts, sockets, fabric, and metal attachments out of water.
4. Rinse and dry completely with a soft lint-free cloth. Check for cracks or chips before reinstalling.
5. Refit securely without overtightening retaining screws against the glass. Restore power when everything is dry and assembled.

Check the result

The shade should sit securely, without rattling or touching a hot bulb. If removal is unclear, the glass is damaged, or access is unsafe, obtain the correct replacement or professional help. Cleaning is not a reason to put a complete light fixture in the dishwasher.
