Death Cleaning (Dostadning) Checklist
A gentle, pragmatic approach to decluttering your life so your loved ones don't have to. Organize your legacy.
By Dan Gold · Sources reviewed

Decluttering for the people who may someday manage your belongings is a practical organizing project. It does not replace a will, legal advice, or consent from other household members.
Work through the checklist
- Choose a small first area. Set a manageable session length and sort one drawer or shelf into keep, donate, recycle, and dispose. Leave shared belongings for a joint decision.
- Make the kept items usable. Group related items, remove duplicates you do not need, and label storage so another person can find things.
- Ask before passing things on. Offer a specific item with a photo and a pickup plan. Do not assume relatives want your furniture or keepsakes.
- Identify meaningful belongings. Record the story and your wishes for a few important items. Discuss legally binding arrangements with an appropriate professional.
- Create a document-location list. Note where originals, insurance, account contacts, and professional contacts are stored. Keep sensitive documents securely and share access only with a trusted person.
- Plan digital access through official features. Use a password manager and the provider’s legacy or emergency-access process. Apple Legacy Contact requires an access key; a note calling itself a digital will does not automatically grant account access.
- Check retention before disposal. Keep records needed for taxes, unresolved claims, ownership, or legal matters. Shred eligible sensitive paper rather than putting it in recycling.
- Finish the outgoing piles. Confirm donation acceptance and municipal disposal rules. Schedule the actual drop-off or collection; avoid moving clutter into another room.

Check the result and follow up
The session is complete when the chosen area is usable, outgoing items have a destination, and your location list can be understood by the person you chose. Revisit the list after major account or household changes.
