Clean Your Range Hood Filter

Clean reusable hood filters with approved detergent methods, replace charcoal filters as directed, and check airflow afterward.

Most reusable metal grease filters can be cleaned with warm water and detergent. Charcoal filters are a different part and commonly need replacement. Check the hood manual before soaking either one.

Clean the right filter

  1. Turn the hood and cooking surface off and let them cool. Remove the filter using its latch or tabs.
  2. Identify whether it is washable metal mesh/baffle or a disposable charcoal filter. Obtain the specified replacement for non-washable parts.
  3. Soak a washable filter in warm detergent solution, using gloves and a soft brush if permitted. Skip boiling water and improvised concentrated cleaners; they add scalding and material-damage risks.
  4. Use a dishwasher only if the manufacturer permits it for that filter. Aluminum and coatings can have restrictions.
  5. Rinse, dry fully, and reinstall with the retaining mechanism engaged.

Check the result

Look for remaining sticky grease and confirm the filter stays securely in place. Run the hood and check normal airflow. A clean filter will not fix a blocked duct, failed fan, or incorrect installation. Persistent weak extraction needs further diagnosis.

Add this task to the appliance deep-clean checklist at the interval in your manual.
