Baby and Pet Proofing
Review gates, furniture anchors, cords, poisons, plants, and water hazards using child-rated devices and repeatable checks.

Review the home at floor level and again as a child’s or pet’s abilities change. Use child-rated devices for children; a pet gate is not automatically a child safety gate. Devices supplement supervision.
Work through the checklist
- Stairs: Install the correct child-rated gates. Use hardware-mounted gates at the top of stairs, fixed to suitable structure as the instructions require.
- Outlets: Use suitable child-resistant protection without creating loose choking-sized parts. Ask an electrician about tamper-resistant receptacles.
- Furniture and TVs: Fit anti-tip anchors with the maker’s hardware and wall requirements; secure dressers as well as shelving.
- Cabinets: Install compatible latches, then pull-test them. Keep magnetic keys and loose powerful magnets out of reach.
- Window cords: Prefer cordless coverings. Tie-ups do not remove every cord hazard; keep beds and climbable furniture away from windows.
- Poisons: Lock medicines, cleaners, detergent pods and batteries away in original containers. Include guests’ bags and pet medications.
- Water: Use suitable toilet locks, empty buckets and baths promptly, and prevent unsupervised access to pools and other water.
- Edges and cords: Secure lamp/charging cords and fit compatible edge protection where needed. Check that protective parts cannot detach easily.
- Plants: Identify each plant and check the ASPCA database for your pet species. Remove hazards rather than assuming a high shelf prevents access.
- Waste and small items: Secure bins and remove coins, button batteries, magnets, strings and other swallowable items. A toilet-paper tube is not a certified choking test.
- Sleep and escape: Keep the infant sleep area consistent with current safety guidance and ensure window/door devices preserve emergency escape.

Check the result and follow up
Pull-test gates and latches, check anchor installation, and repeat the floor-level review in every accessible room. Recheck after visitors, moves and developmental changes. Suspected ingestion needs prompt poison-control or veterinary advice; do not wait for a checklist retest.
