Identify the equipment and its manual. Homeowner tasks are usually accessible filter and vent checks; refrigerant, live electrical compartments, combustion testing and deeper service belong with qualified technicians.
Work through the checklist
- Filter: Turn the system off as directed, verify size/type and approved MERV, and install in the specified airflow direction. Inspect at the manual’s interval.
- Outdoor clearance: Clear loose leaves and vegetation from a safe position. Use the manufacturer’s clearance, not a universal dimension.
- Condensate: Look for standing water or a blocked visible drain. Use only the approved cleaning method; do not routinely pour vinegar into an unknown system.
- Thermostat: Confirm mode, clock and schedule. Check heat-pump recovery settings before using large temperature setbacks.
- Grilles: Clean accessible supply and return covers and leave airflow paths unobstructed by furniture or rugs.
- Sound and smell: Note new grinding, repeated cycling or persistent burning odors. Shut down abnormal operation as directed and arrange service.
- Ducts: Visually check accessible runs for disconnection and damage; avoid asbestos-like insulation or inaccessible spaces.
- CO protection: Test alarms and check their individual replacement dates if combustion equipment is present.
- Professional service: Book the manufacturer-recommended inspection and ask for written findings on safety, drainage and airflow.

Check the result and follow up
Restore covers and power, check normal airflow and observe temperature recovery. Ice, overflow, gas smell or persistent abnormal operation needs prompt help. Never wrap an operating heat pump for winter or pressure-wash its coils. Keep a dated record instead of assuming a paper-at-the-vent test proves good performance.
