Fix a Squeaky Door Hinge

A squeak may come from a dry hinge, loose screws, or a door rubbing its frame. Locate the noise before choosing a lubricant. WD-40 Multi-Use Product does lubricate; the original claim that it is only a solvent was inaccurate.

Find and treat the hinge

1. Move the door slowly and listen at each hinge. Look for rubbing along the frame and visibly loose screws.
2. Check the hinge maker’s care instructions. Use an approved lubricant, protect the floor and nearby paint, and ventilate if the product label requires it.
3. Apply a small amount precisely at the pivot or hinge knuckle. Keep spray off walking surfaces and painted finishes.
4. Open and close the door several times, then wipe away excess.

Check the result

Cycle the door through its full travel and latch it. If the squeak remains, inspect alignment rather than adding more spray. Stripped screw holes, sagging, corrosion, or a damaged hinge may need repair or replacement.

Do not remove all pins or force a non-removable pin. Heavy doors, concealed hinges, and fire-rated door hardware need their specific service instructions. Lubrication cannot repair a sagging frame.
