Revive Velcro

Hook-and-loop fasteners can lose grip because their hooks collect lint or their loops become worn. Cleaning helps with debris, but cannot rebuild broken hooks or flattened loops.

Remove debris

1. Separate the fastener and lay it flat. Check the item’s care instructions before washing.
2. Brush the hook side with a small stiff brush, using controlled strokes that do not tear the material or loosen its attachment.
3. Lift remaining lint with tape or another hook section as the fastener maker recommends. Avoid sharp picks near fabric or skin.
4. Remove loose debris from the loop side gently. If washing is allowed, follow the item’s label and dry it fully.

Check the result

Press the two sides together across their full area and test the closure in normal use. A fastener that still releases too easily may need replacement. Repair a loose sewn attachment or failed adhesive using the item’s appropriate method.

Keep fasteners closed during washing where the label allows it so hooks collect less lint. Do not rely on a cleaned but damaged fastener for a safety-critical load.
