Work when conditions are safe and use local forecasts plus equipment startup limits. This list focuses on the building and systems; use garden and lawn startup for planting and turf timing.
Work through the checklist
- Roof: Scan from the ground for winter damage, loose flashing and missing shingles; photograph concerns for a roofer.
- Gutters: Clear accessible debris safely and check water reaches downspouts and an approved discharge location.
- Grading: Look for ponding or soil sloping toward the house. Plan drainage changes without burying siding or diverting water onto neighbors.
- Cooling: Check approved filters and clearances, then arrange service and test only within the maker’s outdoor-temperature limits.
- Deck/patio: Inspect accessible rails, boards, steps and support/ledger areas. Keep people off a structure with suspect support until assessed.
- Irrigation: Start up under system/backflow instructions when freeze risk allows; inspect each zone for leaks and overspray.
- Screens: Refit sound screens and inspect accessible window seals and drainage paths.
- Foundation: Photograph new or changing cracks with a reference scale and date; seek assessment for movement or water entry.
- Sump: Run the approved test and verify discharge and backup health without reaching into powered equipment.
- Dryer exhaust: Check the full route and exterior damper, not only the hood; arrange cleaning for blockage.
- Outdoor faucets: Observe inside and outside while running to catch concealed freeze damage before leaving a hose connected.

Check the result and follow up
Recheck after rain and after initial system use. Keep a dated list of leaks, structural concerns and unfinished service. Avoid a universal fifty-degree startup rule, water-drop proof of every deck coating, or tightening a suspect railing without inspecting its support.
